Preventing Further Harm

If you have encountered poison ivy then your first step should be to wash any clothing or other items which may have touched the plant.

Removing the Chemical

Thoroughly wash your hands using soap and cool water. We recommend using dawn dish soap since it is gentle but should remove all urushiol(the chemical which causes itching).

Easing Itching

If itching gets worse place cool compresses on the skin, take an oatmeal bath, or apply calamine lotion on the body (except the face and genitals)

Professional Help

If you have a fever from the rash or the skin looks infected even after doing the other steps then we would advise you to go to a doctor. Additionally you should seek help from a medical professional if a large part of your body is affected or if you have breathed in the vapors of the poison ivy plant.
